Procedure
Lithium hydroxide monohydrate (4 mg, 0.095 mmol) was added to a solution of [3-(phenylureido)propyl][2-(4 chlorophenyl)ethyl][4-(methoxycarbonyl)benzyl]ethylammonium iodide (28 mg, 0.044 mmol) in 10% water/methanol (1.3 ml). After stirring at RT for 26 h, the reaction mixture was concentrated under vacuum to dryness. The residue was adsorbed on a plate of silica gel and then developed with 33% methanol/chloroform to afford [3-(phenylureido)propyl][2-(4-chlorophenyl)ethyl][4-(carboxy)benzyl]ethylammonium iodide (19 mg, 70%): MS(ES+) m/e 496 [M-I]+; 1H NMR (400 MHz, CD3OD) δ 8.01 (d, J=8.3 Hz, 2H), 7.53 (d, J=8.3 Hz, 2H), 7.38 (m, 2H), 7.30 (m, 4H), 7.24 (m, 2H), 6.97 (m, 1H), 4.59 (s, 2H), 3.31 (m, 8H), 3.15 (m, 2H), 2.15 (m, 2H), 1.48 (t, J=7.1 Hz, 3H).
