Potassium carbonate (30 g) was added to a solution of (R)-1-(5-acetoxyhexyl)-7-benzyl-3-methylxanthine (33.7 g, 84.7 mmol) in methanol (400 ml) and refluxed for 12 hours. After concentration under reduced pressure, the residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate (500 ml) and water (300 ml). The organic layer was washed with water (100 ml), dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, and concentrated under reduced pressure to provide (R)-7-benzyl-1-(5-hydroxyhexyl)-3-methylxanthine (27 g).
