A solution of 3-{4-[3-(4-chloro-2-phenoxy-phenoxy)-phenoxy]-2-methyl-phenyl}-propionic acid methyl ester (0.221, 0.452 mmol) in methanol (7 mL) is treated with 5 N NaOH (2 mL) and heated to reflux until saponification is completed. The mixture is cooled, and the solvent is removed in vacuo to afford a residue that is acidified with 1 N HCl. The mixture is diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic layer is dried (Na2SO4), and the solvent removed in vacuo to afford 0.230 g (100%) of the title compound. 1H NMR (400 MHz, CDCl3); MS (ES+) m/z mass calculated for C28H23O5Cl 474, found 475 and 477 (M+1 and M+3, 100%).
