Procedure

In an analogous manner to that described in Example 2a), 4-amino-o-cresol is reacted with itaconic acid at 140° C. during 10 min to yield the (RS)-1-(4-hydroxy-3-methyl-phenyl)-5-oxo-pyrrolidine-3-carboxylic acid as a light brown solid; MS: m/e=234 (M−H)+ which directly used in the next step.
