Procedure

Diisobutylaluminium hydride (1M in toluene, 49 mL, 49 mmol) was added slowly to a stirred solution of the product from Step 1 (5.1 g, 12.2 mmol) in dry tetrahydrofuran (100 mL) at −78° C. under nitrogen. After 30 minutes the reaction was allowed to warm to −10° C. and maintained at this temperature for 3 hours. The reaction was quenched with methanol and allowed to warm to room temperature. 1M Aqueous hydrochloric acid (100 mL) was added slowly. The mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate (×3). The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried (Na2SO4) and evaporated to give a dark foam (5.2 g) which was used without further purification.
