3-Hydroxy-azetidine-1-carboxylic acid tert-butyl ester 9b (0.73 g, 4.2 mmole) was dissolved in CH2Cl2 (2 ml) and trifluoroacetic acid (2 ml). CAUTION: The deprotection generated a rapid evolution of gas. The clear solution was stirred for 75 minutes and the solvent was removed, in vacuo, to a clear oil (1.4 g, >100%): 1H-NMR (DMSO-d6, 400 MHz) δ 8.63 (2H, br. s), 4.55–4.48 (1H, m), 4.09–4.02 (2H, m), 3.76–3.68 (2H, m).
