To a solution of 6-methoxy-2-(3-methoxy-phenyl)-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline (20 mg, 0.074 mmol) in THF (1.5 mL) at room temperature is added 1-[2-(4-chloromethyl-phenoxy)-ethyl]-piperidine hydrochloride (PCT Int. Appl. Publ. No. WO 99/19293) (43 mg, 0.149 mmol) followed by phosphazene P1 base (150 mg). The mixture is then heated to 60° C. for 18 h. The crude product is then loaded on a silica gel column and is eluted with 0–100% EtOAc/hexanes to yield 6-methoxy-2-(3-methoxy-phenyl)-1-[4-(2-piperidin-1-yl-ethoxy)-benzyl]-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-quinoline which is contaminated with an unidentified byproduct.
