Procedure
A solution of (R)-2-(5-phenyl-indol-2-ylmethoxycarbonylamino)-3-phenyl-propionic acid methyl ester 46 (0.195 g, 0.455mmole) in methanol (20 ml) was treated with a solution of lithium hydroxide monohydrate (23 mg, 0.55 mmole) in water (1 ml) and heated to 50° C. for 7 hrs, cooled to room temperature, acidified, evaporated, extracted with EtOAc, washed, dried, and evaporated. The residue was purified by chromatography to give about 46 mg of (R)-2-(5-phenyl-indol-2-ylmethoxycarbonylamino)-3-phenyl-propionic acid 47, mp. 168–174°.
