Acetic acid (5-phenyl-benzoxazol-2-yl)methyl ester 50 (409 mg, 1.53 mmol) was dissolved in 10 ml of methanol. Finely ground K2CO3 (53 mg, 0.38 mmol) was added. After 3 hrs, the mixture was concentrated then diluted with water and extracted with ethyl acetate. The extracts were washed with brine, dried, filtered and concentrated to yield about 251 mg of (5-phenyl-benzoxazole-2-yl)methanol 51.
