Procedure
1-tert-Butoxycarbonylpiperazine (5.02 g) was dissolved in DMF (90 mL), and diketene (2.50 mL) was added thereto at room temperature. The mixture was stirred for 1.5 hr and the solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure. Water was added to the residue, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The extract was washed with brine and dried. The solvent was evaporated under reduced pressure to give 1-acetoacetyl-4-tert-butoxycarbonylpiperazine (6.26 g) as a pale-brown powder.
