Procedure

4-Hydroxybenzoic acid (10 g) was dissolved in methanol (200 ml.), concentrated sulphuric acid (2 ml.) was added and the mixture boiled under reflux for 18 hours. The resulting mixture was poured into iced water, extracted with 2×100 ml. of diethyl ether, washed with 2×100 ml. saturated sodium bicarbonate solution, 1×100 ml. of water, dried and evaporated to give methyl 4-hydroxybenzoate.
