Hydrogen chloride gas is bubbled into a solution of (3R)-3-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-cyclopropylpropanoic acid (5.79 g, 25.85 mmol) in methanol (100 ml) at 0° C. for 30 seconds. The solution is allowed to warm to room temperature and stirred for 18 hours. The solution is concentrated in vacuo, diluted with chloroform (100 ml) and washed with 5% aqueous sodium bicarbonate (100 ml). The organic layer is dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate and concentrated in vacuo. The residue is chromatographed on silica gel eluting with ether:hexane (10:90) to yield the title compound as a colorless liquid (5.15 g, 84% from (3R)-3-(4-chlorophenyl)-3-cyclopropylpropanenitrile) which is characterized by 1HNMR, IR and mass spectral analyses.
