Procedure

Methyl 2-[4-(3,4-dichlorobenzyl)piperazin-1-ylmethyl]propionate (470 mg, 1.36 mmol) and lithium hydroxide monohydrate (185 mg, 4.41 mmol) were dissolved in water (5 ml) and methanol (15 ml) and stirred at room temperature. After 21 h, the solvents were removed under reduced pressure. The resulting residue was taken up in a mixture of methylene chloride and water, and the aqueous layer was made acidic (˜pH 4) with 1M HCl. The layers were separated and the aqueous phase was extracted with several portions of methylene chloride. The combined organic layers were dried over sodium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford 2-(RS)-[4-(3,4-dichlorobenzyl)piperazin-1-ylmethyl]propionic acid (444 mg) as a pale-yellow foam.
