Ethyl 2-(4-cyanopyridin-3-yl)acetate (2.3 g, 12.10 mmol) was reacted with NaBH4 (919 mg, 24.21 mmol) and ethanol (20 mL) at room temperature for 72 hours to afford the crude product. Purification by column chromatography on silica gel (2% methanol in CHCl3) afforded 650 mg of the product.
