6-Methyl-2-(4-methylpyridin-3-yl)-3,4-dihydroisoquinolin-1(2H)-one (I-69e: 1 g, 3.953 mmol) in conc. H2SO4 (11.9 mL) was reacted with KNO3 (439 mg, 4.348 mmol) to afford 940 mg of the product (80.3% yield).
