Chlorosulfonic acid (12.6 mL) was added to a stirred solution of 3-(3-fluoro-4-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)propanoic acid (I-77b: 1.0 g, 4.2707 mmol). The resulting mixture was stirred for 5 hours at 0° C. The reaction was monitored by TLC (20% ethyl acetate in hexane). The reaction mixture was quenched with ice water and extracted with chloroform (2×150 mL). The organic layer was dried over Na2SO4 and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the crude product. Purification by column chromatography on silica gel (5% ethyl acetate in hexane), afforded 550 mg of the product (58.9% yield).
