Phenylmagnesium bromide (850 mg, 4.7 mmol) was added to a solution of ethyl 5-formyl-4′-methylbiphenyl-3-carboxylate (360 mg, 1.3 mmol) in tetrahydrofuran (8 mL) at 0° C. The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 h, and then water (10 mL) was added. The mixture was extracted with EtOAc (20 mL×2). The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous MgSO4 and concentrated. The residue was purified by silica gel column chromatography to afford the title compound.
