A mixture of methyl 3-bromo-5-(2,2,2-trifluoro-1-hydroxyethyl)benzoate (300 mg, 0.96 mmol), 5-methyl-2-(4,4,5,5-tetramethyl-1,3,2-dioxaborolan-2-yl)benzonitrile (280 mg, 1.1 mmol), tetrakis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(0) (60 mg, 0.052 mmol) in N,N-dimethylformamide (0.75 mL) and toluene (1.5 mL) under nitrogen was subjected to microwave irradiation at 110° C. for 1 h. After cooling, the mixture was diluted with water (15 mL) and extracted with EtOAc (20 mL×3). The combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous MgSO4, and concentrated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography to afford the title compound.
