Procedure

To a solution of butanol (0.07 g, 0.99 mmol) in anhydrous dimethylsulfoxide (2 mL) were added cesium carbonate (0.59 g, 1.81 mmol) and tert-butyl 5-chloro-2,4-difluorobenzoate (0.22 g, 0.90 mmol) and the reaction mixture was stirred at 70° C. for 16 hours. The reaction mixture was cooled down to room temperature and acidified to pH=1 with 5% aqueous hydrochloric acid solution and extracted with ethyl acetate (2×15 mL). The combined organic layers were washed with brine (15 mL); dried over anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. Purification of the residue by column chromatography (0 to 10% ethyl acetate in hexanes) afforded the title compound (0.23 g, 72%); MS (ES+) m/z 303.2, 305.2 (M+1).
