LiAlH4 (153 g, 4 mol) was added to a solution of trans-4-(hydroxymethyl)cyclohexylmethyl 4-methylbenzenesulfonate (400 g, 1.34 mol) in THF (3000 mL) at −20° C. The mixture was stirred at room temperature for 3 h. It was quenched with water (10 L) and filtered. The filtrate was concentrated in vacuo to give trans-(4-methylcyclohexyl)methanol.
