Procedure

To tert-butyl 4-(2,4-dimethoxypyrimidin-5-yl)phenethylcarbamate (0.5 g, 1.39 mmol) was added aqueous hydrochloric acid (6 M, 15 mL) and the reaction mixture stirred at reflux for 4 hours. No starting material was observed by LCMS. The precipitate was filtered, washed with water (5 mL) and dried under reduced pressure (50° C.) to give a pale yellow solid, 5-(4-(2-aminoethyl)phenyl)pyrimidine-2,4(1H,3H)-dione hydrochloride (0.32 g, 1.35 mmol, 86%).
