(E,E,E,E)-3,7-dimethyl-9-(2,4-dimethyl-3-furyl)-2,4,6,8-nonatetraenoic acid chloride (1.5 g.) was dissolved in a solution of methanol and sodium ethoxide (0.3 g.) and the resulting mixture was then concentrated to dryness to give sodium (E,E,E,E)-3,7-dimethyl-9-(2,4-dimethyl-3-furyl)-2,4,6,8-nonatetraenoate m.p.~280° with decomposition as an amorphous solid.
