Procedure

A mixture of m-phenoxybenzyl 2-(2-indenyl)-3-methylbutanoate (8 mmol), potassium hydroxide (24 mmol), ethanol (25 ml) and water (4 ml) is heated to reflux for about 3 hours. After cooling, the reaction is acidified with dilute hydrochloric acid. The mixture is extracted with ether, and the ether phase is washed to neutrality with saturated NaCl solution. Removal of solvent by evaporation yields 2-(2-indenyl)-3-methylbutanoic acid.
