Procedure

Twenty grams of maleic anhydride is dissolved in 200 mls methanol, 4.8 grams (0.2 moles) of lithium hydroxide is added. The mixture is stirred until all the lithium hydroxide dissolves (at this point the pH reads 7.0). To the solution is added acetone and the solid is filtered and dried. 23 grams product is obtained.
