Procedure

Dissolve 2-(4-cyclopropanecarbonyl-phenyl)-2-methylpropionitrile (100 mg) in aqueous ethanolic potassium hydroxide (2 mL) (prepared from ethanol (5 mL), water (5 mL) and solid potassium hydroxide (1.5 g). Stir overnight at room temperature, then heat at reflux for 6 hours. Cool and evaporate the solvent in vacuo to give the title compound.
