Procedure
To a solution of ammonium dithiocarbamate ##STR5## (1.10 g) in water (10 ml) were added ethyl bromopyruvate (1.95 g) and ethanol (5 ml) at ice-cooling. After stirring at room temperature for 1 hour, the mixture was poured into a mixture of water and ethyl acetate. The separated organic layer was washed with saturated sodium chloride solution (×2), dried over magnesium sulfate and evaporated under reduced pressure. The residue was subjected to column chromatography on silica gel (eluent: ethyl acetate/n-hexane) to give 4-ethoxycarbonyl-2-mercaptothiazole (1.21 g).
