Procedure
Methanesulfonyl chloride (0.94 ml) was added to a solution of ethyl 3-(4-benzyloxyphenyl)lactate (3.32 g), which is the product of Reference example 1(b), in anhydrous dichloromethane (30 ml). To this mixture triethylamine (2.47 ml) was added dropwise in an ice bath. The mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 3 hours. The reaction mixture was concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was partitioned between ethyl acetate and water. The ethyl acetate layer was separated and dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was crystallized from hexane to afford the desired product (3.60 g) as colorless crystals.
