Procedure

The ester was dissolved in 20 ml of ethanol and treated with a solution of 1 g of KOH (potassium hydroxyde) in 2 ml of water. After 2 hours at 40° C. the reaction mixture was poured on ice/water, acidified with 2 N HCl and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was dried (Na2SO4) and the solvent evaporated. The residue was crystallized from ethyl acetate/pentane and gave 0.6 g of 6-[(4,4,7,7-tetramethyl-2-pentyl-2,3,4,5,6,7-hexahydro-1H-indene-2-carbonyl)-amino]-nicotinic acid as colorless crystals, m. p. 172-174° C.
