Reaction Steps
A mixture of the product prepared in STEP 2 (5.8 g), ethylene glycol (15 mg) and KOH (5.6 g) was heated at 150 degrees for two days under nitrogen. The solution was cooled to room temperature and poured into 1% hydrochloric acid/water (200 ml). The aqueous portion was extracted well with ethyl acetate and the combined organic extract was washed with water, brine and dried over MgSO4. Solvent was removed to give the crude product that was used without further purification. The 1H NMR was consistent with the proposed structure.
