Procedure

3.8 g (0.0146 mol) of 5,7-di-tert-butyl-3-hydroxy-benzofuranone, 6.1 g (0.032 mol) of p-toluenesulfonic acid and 6.9 g (0.032 mol) of 4-acetamino-tetramethylpiperidine (TEMPO) are stirred in 100 ml of dichloromethane at room temperature for 24 hours. The yellow solution is then washed three times with 200 ml of 5% hydrochloric acid each time, dried over magnesium sulfate and concentrated to dryness by evaporation. Crystallisation of the residue from hexane yields 1 g of the above-mentioned compound.
