Procedure
A solution of [methyl(phenylmethoxy)phosphinyl]acetic acid in ethyl acetate-ether is treated with an excess of diazomethane in ether and stirred for three hours. The excess diazomethane is destroyed by the addition of acetic acid. The solution is washed with sodium bicarbonate and brine, dried over magnesium sulfate, and evaporated to give an 87% yield of [methyl(phenylmethoxy)phosphinyl]acetic acid, methyl ester as a clear oil (TLC Rf =0.18 (ethyl acetate)).
