Procedure

Add a 1:1 ethanol:ethyl acetate mixture to palladium on carbon (catalytic, 0.30 g) followed by 3(2′-nitro-biphenyl-4-yl)-4-cyano-1-methyl-1H-pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (3.00 g, 8.30 mmol, prepared in example E-9) with stirring. Subject the reaction to an atmosphere of hydrogen gas. After 18 hours, filter and concentrate under reduced pressure. Purify the residue by flash chromatography eluting with ethyl acetate:hexanes to provide the title compound. Mass spectrum (m/e): 332.1 (M+1).
