Procedure

Sodium azide (1.08 g, 16.62 mmol) was suspended in N,N-dimethylformamide (10 mL) and a stock solution of 3,4-dibromo-1-(3-fluorobenzyl)pyridin-2(1H)-one (from step 1) in N,N-dimethylformamide (33.0 mL, 0.33 M) was added and the resulting mixture was heated to 60° C. for 4 hours. Ice water (30 mL) was added and the aqueous layer was extracted with ethyl acetate (4×50 mL). The combined organics were washed with H2O (3×50 mL), brine (2×25 mL), dried over MgSO4, concentrated, and subjected to chromatography (silica gel, ethyl acetate with 10% methanol/hexane) to afford an off-white solid (3.50 g, 98%).
