A mixture of intermediate (29) (0.079 mol) in methanol (250 ml) was hydrogenated with palladium-on-carbon (10%) (2 g) as a catalyst. After uptake of hydrogen (2 equivalents), the catalyst was filtered over celite and the filtrate was evaporated, yielding 13.8 g of (trans)-4-(aminomethyl)-1-butyl-3-piperidinol (intermediate 30).
