Procedure

A solution of 5-(cyclopropyl-methyl-amino)-8,8-dimethyl-5,6,7,8-tetrahydronaphthalene-2-carboxylic acid methyl ester (Intermediate 55, 0.236 g, 0.83 mmol) in methanol (4 mL) and tetrahydrofuran (4 mL) was treated with a 2M solution of sodium hydroxide (4 mL, 8 mmol) and the resulting reaction mixture was stirred at ambient temperature overnight. The volatiles were evaporated in vacuo to a residue that was neutralized with saturated aqueous ammonium chloride solution and extracted with ethyl acetate. The organic phase was dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and evaporated in vacuo to afford the title compound as a solid (0.22 g, 100%).
