Reaction Steps

A mixture of cis-4,5-bis-(4-methylphenyl)imidazolidine-2-thione (31) (5.2 g, 0.0184 mol) and methyl iodide (1.72 mL, 0.0276 mol) in abs. EtOH (30 mL) is heated at 90° C. overnight. The reaction mixture is cooled to rt, concentrated in vacuo, and the residue suspended in abs EtOH:Et2O. The insoluble material is filtered to give 7.56 g of the product 48. 1H NMR (DMSO-d6) δ 10.68 (s, 2 H), 7.00-6.85 (m, 8 H), 5.72 (s, 2 H), 2.79 (s, 3 H), 2.15 (s, 6 H); MS: m/z 297 (M++1).
