Procedure

A solution of 5-bromo-5-benzylbarbituric acid (2.15 g) and N-(2-hydroxyethyl)piperazine in 50 ml of ethanol is refluxed for 4 hours, then it is cooled to room temperature and added with 4 ml of triethylamine. The solvent is evaporated off and the white residue is redissolved in a ethyl acetatemethanol 3:1 mixture. An orange solid crystallizes, which is recovered by filtration. After recrystallization from ethanol 0.62 g of the product are obtained, m.p. 243-246° C.
