To a solution of 1-[(6-chloro-2-fluoro-3-methylphenyl)oxy]naphthalene (1.69 g, 5.89 mmol) in carbon tetrachloride (20 mL) was added N-bromosuccinimide (1.154 g, 6.48 mmol) and AIBN (0.048 g, 0.295 mmol). The mixture was heated at reflux overnight. The reaction mixture was filtered through Celite and the solvent was evaporated. The residue was purified by flash chromatography (hexane:ethyl acetate) to give the desired product (0.98 g, 45.5%) as a light yellow oil. 1H NMR (400 MHz, chloroform-d) δ ppm 8.43-8.51 (m, 1H), 7.84-7.92 (m, 1H), 7.53-7.64 (m, 3H), 7.23-7.34 (m, 3H), 6.50 (d, 1H), 4.50 (d, 2H).
