Procedure
To a solution of (E)-ethyl-3-(6-(trifluoromethyl)pyridin-3-yl)acrylate (2.65 g, 10.8 mmol) in THF/EtOH (1/1, 20 mL) was added 2.28 M NaOH (aq.) (14.2 mL) at rt. The reaction mixture was stirred at rt for 4 h and was then neutralized by adding 1M HCl(aq.). The water-phase was extracted with CH2Cl2/MeOH 9/1 (5×20 mL), the combined organics dried (MgSO4), filtered and evaporated to give the title compound (2.15 g, 9.90 mmol, 91%) as an off white solid. This material was used directly in the next step without further purification.
