6-Hydroxy-5-methoxybenzofuran-2-carboxylic acid ethyl ester (1.5 g) was dissolved to dichloromethane (30 ml) and the solution cooled to −20° C. 1 M HNO3 in dichloromethane (6.4 ml) was added and after 10 minutes the mixture poured in ice water. The dichloromethane layer was separated and the water phase extracted with ethyl acetate. The combined organic phases were dried with Na2SO4 and evaporated to dryness.
