A solution of 1 M HNO3 in dichloromethane (0.67 ml) was added to a solution of (3-chloro-5,6-dihydroxy-benzo[b]thiophen-2-yl)-(4-hydroxy-piperidin-1-yl)-methanone (0.17 g) in ethyl acetate (10 ml). Stirring was continued at 60° C. for 3 hours and then at room temperature overnight. The mixture was concentrated to smaller volume and the precipitate filtered and washed with water. The crude product was recrystallized from N,N-dimethylformamide/ethanol (25:75).
