To a solution of ethyl [2-(1,3-dioxolan-2-yl)-1,3-thiazol-5-yl](oxo)acetate (2.00 g) in ethanol (20 mL) was slowly added sodium borohydride (0.50 g). The reaction mixture was stirred at room temperature for 1 hr, 6M hydrochloric acid was added, and the mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate. The ethyl acetate layer was washed with saturated brine, dried (MgSO4) and concentrated to give the title compound (1.50 g, yield 89%) as a colorless oil. MS: 218 (MH+).
