Procedure

To a stirring solution of 2-methoxycarbonylphenyl isocyanate (5.44 g, 30.71 mmol) in 1,2-dichloroethane (30 mL) was added Boc-piperazine (5.72 g, 30.71 mmol). After 1.5 h, the solvent was removed in vacuo and the solid residue was suspended in diethyl ether with vigorous stirring, then filtered and dried to give 6.15 g (55%) of a white solid. A second crop was isolated by adding hexanes to the mother liquor. The precipitate was again filtered and dried in vacuo to give 3.32 g (30%) of a white solid.
