To a mixture of 10.0 g of (2S,4R)-2-ethoxycarbonyl-4-hydroxy pyrrolidine hydrochloride, 15.5 g of potassium carbonate and 50 ml of chloroform, 9.46 g of diethyl sulfate were dropwise added. At 40° C., the mixture was stirred for 4 hours and then allowed to cool, washed with water, added with an aqueous dilute HCl solution and the formed aqueous layer was separated. This aqueous layer was neutralized with potassium carbonate, extracted with chloroform and the extract was washed with water, dried and concentrated under reduced pressure to obtain (2S,4R)-2-ethoxycarbonyl-N-ethyl4-hydroxy pyrrolidine as an oily product. Yield 8.15 g.
