Procedure
Sodium metal (160 mg, 6.96 mmol) was allowed to react with dry methanol (5 ml) under nitrogen until evolution of hydrogen had ceased. 6-Chloro-9-(4-cyanophenyl)-8-methylpurine (1.03 g, 3.82 mmol) was added in one portion and the resulting slurry was heated under reflux for 90 minutes. The solvent was removed under reduced pressure and the residual gum was dissolved in dichloromethane (50 ml). The solution was washed with brine (20 ml), dried (MgSO4) and concentrated under reduced pressure to give the title compound, (840 mg, 83%).
