Procedure
To a stirred solution of 30 parts of 1-(4-chloro-3-nitrophenyl)-2-methyl-1-propanone in 240 parts of methanol was added a solution of 20 parts of methanamine in 160 parts of methanol. After stirring for 12 hours at 60° C., the reaction mixture was evaporated to dry, yielding 30 parts (100%) of 2-methyl-1-[4-(methylamino)-3-nitrophenyl]-1-propanone as a residue (interm. 45).
