To a solution of 2-p-tolylbenzo[d]thiazol-5-amine (110 mg, 0.46 mmol) in pyridine (3 mL) at room temperature was added butyryl chloride (53 μL, 0.50 mmol). The resulting mixture was stirred at room temperature for 2 days. Ethyl acetate was added and the organic layer was washed with saturated aqueous copper sulfate, followed by aqueous sodium bicarbonate and finally with brine. The combined organic layers were dried over anhydrous MgSO4 and evaporated. The resulting solid was purified by column chromatography eluting with ethyl acetate/hexanes 50:50 v/v to afford 25 mg (18%) of the title compound (LCMS RT=7.10 min, MH+ 311.0)
