Procedure
To a stirred solution of 18 g (28 mmol) of 4-methoxybenzyl[(1R)-1-[(R)-{[tert-butyl(dimethyl)silyl]oxy}(6-chloropyridin-3-yl)methyl]-5-(4-nitrophenyl)-4-oxopentyl]carbamate from Step B in 75 mL of anhydrous dichloromethane was added 75 ml of trifluoroacetic acid. The resulting mixture was stirred at ambient temperature for 2 h during which time the reaction became dark red in color. All volatiles were removed in vacuo and the residue dissolved in 300 mL of dichloromethane. The solution was washed with a saturated aqueous sodium bicarbonate solution (2×100 mL), brine (100 ml) and then dried over magnesium sulfate and filtered. All volatiles were evaporated in vacuo to afford the title compound as a dark red gum (13 g, >99%) that was used immediately without further purification. LC-MS: m/z (ES) 460.4 (MH)+.
