N-Iodosuccinimide (6.89 g, 30.6 mmol) was added to a solution of ethyl 6-methyl-2-oxo-1-[3-(trifluoromethyl)phenyl]-1,2-dihydropyridine-3-carboxylate (9.9 g, 30.5 mmol) in DCM (45 ml) and TFA (38 ml) under a nitrogen atmosphere. After 19 h stirring at ambient temperature the solvent was concentrated in vacuo. Saturated aqueous sodium hydrogen carbonate solution and ethyl acetate were added to the residue to neutralize the remaining TFA. The organic phase was collected, washed with water and brine, dried over sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated in vacuo. The residue was purified by flash chromatography on silica eluting with DCM/methanol (10:0.2) to give the title compound as a yellow solid (11.4 g, 83%).
