5-(Methylsulfonyl)pyridine-2-carbonitrile (2.15 g, 11.8 mmol) was dissolved in methanol (230 ml). 6M HCl (1 ml) and 10% palladium on carbon (2.34 mg) were added and the mixture was stirred under an atmospheric pressure of hydrogen overnight. The catalyst was removed by filtration through celite and the solvent was evaporated, water was added and the solution was freeze-dried to afford the title compound as a yellow powder (2.34 g, 89%).
